Remove Gaps Between Your Teeth With Help From Your Cosmetic Dentist In weybridge
Embarrassed by the gaps between your teeth? Maybe you find them unappealing or are troubled by the food particles that get lodged in these spaces after a meal, either way, gaps between teeth can be rather annoying. In medical terms, a gap (or space) between teeth is called diastema. The most common occurrence of this problem happens between the two upper front teeth although, it may be seen between any two teeth.
What causes Diastema?
Most commonly, Diastema is caused due to a mismatch in the size of the teeth and jaw bones – a gap will occur when the teeth are too small as compared to the size of the jaw bones. Conversely, if the teeth are too big in size as compared to the jaw bones, they will appear crowded. Other causes of diastema may include an oversized labial frenum, incorrect habits (such as thumb sucking which causes the teeth to be pulled forward), an incorrect swallowing reflex and gum disease that causes loss of jaw bones supporting the teeth.
Treatment
Fortunately, diastema need not be permanent and several treatments are available for diastema based on its severity. Listed below are some of the treatments available to help rid the gaps between your teeth:
- Dental bonding: This is the least expensive, quickest and the simplest method for treating diastema. Dental bonding involves the application of a tooth-colored composite resin substance polished to look natural and hardened with a special light. Dental bonding procedure can be completed in a single visit and does not require follow-up visits to your dentist.
- Porcelain Veneers: This is another procedure used in effectively treating diastema. It is relatively simple although, a more detailed procedure compared to dental bonding. This is an irreversible procedure that involves placing and bonding a thin piece of porcelain over the front of a tooth. This covers up the spaces between your teeth.
- Braces: Some people use braces to fill the spaces between their teeth by ‘pulling’ the teeth closer to each other thus filling up an ‘in-between’ gaps. However, there is no ‘spot reduction’ and a full set of braces must be used irrespective of where the actual diastema is.
If you require any of the above procedures or if the gaps are caused by gum diseases, our professional dentists at Munro Hall Clinic can help suggest the perfect treatment to eliminate those embarrassing spaces between your teeth and help restore your smile.
