But “What are mouth ulcers and how do they develop?” If you’re searching for an answer to this question, then you have come to the right place.

This blog has everything you need to know about mouth ulcers, their types, causes, and treatment. So, read till the end to know more about this oral health condition.

What Are Mouth Ulcers?

According to Healthline, oral ulcers are small, painful sores that develop inside the mouth. Although no definitive cause for oral ulcers is known, they typically occur due to injuries, stress, allergies, and diet changes.

What Are The Types Of Mouth Ulcers?

There are three main types of oral ulcers: minor, major, and herpetiform ulcers.

  • Minor Ulcers – minor ulcers (canker sores) are the most common type of oral ulcers. These are small ulcers, typically measuring around 5mm or smaller. Minor ulcers usually heal within 1 – 2 weeks.
  • Major Ulcers – these are larger, deeper ulcers that measure 10mm or more. Major ulcers or canker sores may last between 5 and 10 weeks, and may sometimes leave behind scars.
  • Herpetiform Ulcers – these ulcers appear as a cluster of smaller ulcers that merge into larger ulcers. They are so named because they resemble sores associated with herpes. Hence, the name “herpetiform”. However, they don’t have any connection to herpes. These are the least common type of ulcers that typically heal within 1-2 weeks.

Apart from these, there are other, less common types of ulcers such as lichen planus, erythroplakia, leukoplakia, oral thrush, and mouth cancer.

What Causes Mouth Ulcers And Are They Curable?

The exact cause of oral ulcers is not fully known. However, they may be caused due to various factors such as:

  • Oral tissue trauma or injury caused by dental treatment
  • Cheek biting
  • Allergic reaction
  • Irritation caused by poorly fitting dentures
  • Irritation caused by braces or orthodontic retainers
  • Using an abrasive toothpaste
  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Hormonal changes in females
  • Dietary factors
  • Certain medications can also cause oral ulceration

How Long Do Mouth Ulcers Last?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, most oral ulcers go away between 7 and 14 days and heal uneventfully. However, some ulcers, such as major ulcers, may last longer. An ulceration may become a cause for concern if it does not go away after a few weeks. In such cases, you should consult a dentist immediately, so that the non-healing lesion can be examined and treated.

Are Mouth Ulcers Caused By Stress?

Stress is among the known causes of oral ulcers. But how does stress lead to ulcers in the mouth? When someone is stressed, their immune system is weakened, making them more susceptible to oral inflammation and irritation. Some research studies have also shown a link between mental health and oral ulceration. This explains why many students often develop oral ulcers during examinations, because they are stressed.

Are Mouth Ulcers A Symptom Of Stomach Ulcers?

No, mouth ulcers are not a symptom of stomach ulcers. However, oral ulcers can sometimes be associated with various gastrointestinal conditions that may cause ulcers in the stomach. So, there is no direct link between oral and gastric ulcers.

Does Taking Tea Cause Mouth Ulcers?

There is no direct association between tea and oral ulcers. However, taking hot beverages, including tea and coffee, can aggravate existing oral ulcers due to irritation. So, one should avoid these drinks when they are suffering from mouth ulcers.

Is Diet A Factor In Whether Or Not You Get Mouth Ulcers?

Yes, diet is one of the factors that can cause mouth ulcers. For example, conditions such as iron, Vitamin B12, folic acid, and zinc deficiency can increase the risk of oral ulcers. Furthermore, certain foods, such as spices, acidic, and salty foods, are known to irritate the mouth and increase the risk of canker sores.

Is a Mouth Ulcer the Starting Point Of Mouth Cancer?

If an ulcer heals within a few weeks, it is no cause for concern. However, if someone’s oral ulcers have not healed for a long time, they should consult their dentist. This is because sometimes, an oral ulcer could be a starting point for oral cancer. In such a condition, your dentist will perform a careful examination and take a sample for biopsy in case of suspicion. If the diagnosis comes out positive for oral cancer, they will remove the lesion quickly to prevent further growth and damage.

Should I See A Dentist Or A Doctor For Mouth Sores?

There is no need to see a dentist for ulcers that heal within 1 – 2 weeks, even if they are recurrent. On the other hand, if someone has an ulcer that hasn’t healed for many weeks, they should visit their dentist immediately. This is because a non-healing ulcer may be an indication of an oral cancer lesion. So, non-healing ulcers shouldn’t be taken lightly.
