Safe amalgam removal, in our Weybridge surgery
Mercury-Free & Toxin Removal
A completely mercury-safe and metal-free practice.
There has been a steady reduction in the use of amalgam fillings across the UK in recent years (in our view a very positive step in the right direction), and the wider trend is unmistakably moving away from mercury in dentistry altogether.
At the Munro-Hall Clinic, it has been our cornerstone principle for many years to operate a completely metal-free dental practice, for a wide variety of reasons we’re always happy to discuss when we welcome you here. This sits at the heart of our wider holistic approach to dentistry.
We are also one of the few clinics in the UK to follow a thoroughly documented, IAOMT-specific protocol for removing amalgam fillings safely, with absolutely minimum exposure of released mercury and its vapour to the patient.
Why It Matters
Why we say no to mercury
A material the world is moving on from
Mercury amalgam has been used in fillings for well over a century, but attitudes, and regulations, have shifted decisively. Across Europe its use in children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers is already restricted, and the long-term direction of travel is clear. We believe there is no good reason to place a known toxic metal into the mouth when safer, better-performing alternatives exist.
A whole-body view of dental health
Holistic, biologically-neutral dentistry recognises that what happens in the mouth doesn’t stay in the mouth. Removing toxic materials and replacing them with biocompatible ones is a foundational part of that philosophy, and it’s precisely this approach that has drawn patients to us from across the country and from overseas.
Safe Amalgam Removal · Mercury Safe
The SMART protocol: a mercury-safe approach
We follow the SMART protocol (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique), acknowledged and endorsed by the IAOMT (the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology), of which all of our dentists are active members. Its whole purpose is to keep everyone mercury safe: protecting the patient, the clinical team and the environment from the mercury vapour released as an amalgam filling is removed.
It is partly this mercury-safe protocol that has attracted so many of our patients from other parts of the country, as well as from overseas. It is explained to each patient in full at their initial consultation, where we confirm whether the procedure is right for you.

- Removal planned and explained at your initial consultation
- Safe, biocompatible replacement materials placed straight away
Biocompatible Materials
Safe, non-metal alternatives
When it comes to replacing amalgam restorations, we pride ourselves on offering a small, carefully chosen handful of biologically compatible materials, extensively researched, and demonstrating better performance characteristics than amalgam while being genuinely safe to use.
A purer composite, imported from Switzerland
One composite filling material of choice that we use is imported from Switzerland and is completely free of any potentially allergenic and cytotoxic impact. Most composites used in general dentistry contain some level of Bis-DMA (ultimately contributing to BPA release in the mouth), and often HEMA and TEGDMA elements that may be allergenic. We feel it is vital to offer a near-ideal alternative that is congruent with our ethos and true to biologically-neutral dentistry as far as possible.
Metal-free, for the whole mouth
Our metal-free commitment extends beyond fillings. Where teeth need to be replaced or restored more substantially, we favour biocompatible, non-metal solutions, including zirconia dental implants, so your dentistry stays consistent with a truly metal-free philosophy from front to back.
“I had a multitude of psychological and physical symptoms. After removing the mercury and infections safely, I experienced a quick and long-lasting recovery.”

Your Questions Answered
Mercury-free dentistry FAQs
When done correctly, yes. The risk during removal comes from mercury vapour released as the filling is drilled out, which is exactly what our IAOMT-endorsed Safe Amalgam Removal protocol is designed to control. Following a documented, repeatable procedure, we minimise your exposure to released mercury and its vapour at every step, and place a safe, biocompatible material straight away.
In keeping with our holistic, biologically-neutral approach, we believe there is no good reason to keep a known toxic metal in the mouth when safer, better-performing alternatives exist. Many patients also choose removal because they want their dentistry to be consistent with a fully metal-free philosophy.
We use a small, carefully selected handful of biologically compatible, non-metal materials. One composite of choice is imported from Switzerland and is completely free of potentially allergenic and cytotoxic impurities, avoiding the Bis-DMA, HEMA and TEGDMA elements found in many standard composites. Where more substantial restoration is needed, we favour metal-free options such as zirconia implants.

Yes. We explain the Safe Amalgam Removal protocol to each patient at their initial consultation and confirm whether the procedure is appropriate for you. It’s also the right moment to discuss replacement materials and plan treatment around your individual needs.
